MEN’S GUIDE TO SKINCARE
- 20 Aug 2021
Skin, being the largest organ of the body, is common to all. Then why has the care for it been stereotyped? Why is it that only women are shown to care for their skin? Why are men made to believe that this is something that they don’t need?
Skin care is for all. All skin textures and tones, all ages, and all genders, no matter how you identify.
That being said, the care differs for all. Men’s skin is different from that of women, which is a major factor to take into consideration.

There are certain factors that can be generalised as to being common for all male skin. But, yet again, skin differs from person to person. Some of these common characteristics are:
THICKNESS
The male skin is about 25% thicker than female skin. It has more collagen levels, making it comparatively firmer. But, as per dermatologists, this collagen level keeps declining steadily over the years. Collagen level in female skin drops dramatically near menopause. This is why the effects are more visible in females.
TEXTURE AND FACIAL HAIR
To have a beard or not to - the ultimate hygiene, as well as styling question. This makes maintaining and shaving facial hair essential. Who doesn’t want to maintain that signature look!
Men’s skin is thus prone to be rougher and drier due to frequent grooming. This also makes the skin sensitive and can cause irritation. If not careful, shaving can also lead to cuts and razor burns, which is troublesome. More problems include inflammation, redness, bumps, and ingrown hair.
Shaving has both positives and negatives. It scrapes off the upper skin barrier, which leaves the premature cells unprotected. On the flip side, this makes absorption of products easier.
PORES AND SEBUM
Because of active sebaceous glands, men have larger pores than women. Pores are responsible for releasing sebum (oil), sweat, and other material. This makes the sebum levels higher in men, in fact, double that of in women! Due to this, men are more prone to acne and oily skin.
AGEING
Men have a higher level of collagen, which diminishes at a constant rate. Collagen is the protein which keeps the skin firm and elastic. Women experience a sharper decline in collagen levels, making the signs of aging more prominent for them. It is also said that the male skin looks almost 15 years younger than female skin (good news for men, no?). But even though the signs appear later for men, they appear more quickly once they start. The first signs can be seen near the eyes.
SKIN PH LEVELS
Without much conclusive evidence, it is taken that men have a lower pH level than women. This level increases with age. Lower pH means more acidic skin. This can lead to more breakouts, acne, and skin issues.
CARING FOR THE MALE SKIN
Once you have experienced how good and satisfying skincare feels, there is no going back. Skincare is something that is not only fulfilling, but also an essential. Giving it a gender tag is unnecessary, and also doesn’t make sense (we all got skin?)
All the products of our brand are gender neutral and can be used by you, no matter how you identify. We promote skincare for all, which is safe and natural. The products are also non comedogenic, which will make sure those pores don’t get clogged.
That being said, here is a simple yet effective skincare routine for men. It takes care of all your specific skin care needs and will make your skin refreshed.
CLEANSE AND EXFOLIATE
Cleansing is the basic and the most important step. It helps in removing the excess oil (sebum) and impurities from the skin. Deeply cleansing the pores is the way to go, since men are said to sweat more too.
The Birch Sap Facial Cleanser cleans the pores, healing and preventing acne. It also keeps the skin hydrated.
You can exfoliate three to four times a week. It helps in removing the dead skin cells and ingrown hair. It also helps in achieving a smoother and more effective shave.

TONE AND TREAT
Toners help in removing residue impurities and oil from the skin. Our Birch Sap Facial Tonic Mist helps in tightening of pores and reducing their large appearance. This can be used as a toner as well as a face and a body mist. You can even use it multiple times a day to keep you refreshed.
You can also work on treating any marks, pigmentation, dark spots, and blemishes. Use a serum or active ingredients that penetrate the skin barrier.
The Clarifying and Brightening Serum helps in solving all your skin concerns, and even works on mild acne and acne marks.
MOISTURISE
Keeping the skin moisturised and hydrated is key. It improves skin elasticity and strength. It is advised to use a lightweight and easily absorbing cream that doesn’t weigh down the already oily skin. The Cloudberry/Sea Lettuce Hydrating Cream is light and great for daily use.
Further, full body moisturisation is something that should not be overlooked. The body is as important as the face, and just as prone to problems. Keep your skin clean and moisturised to avoid body acne, dryness, or skin infections.
You can use any light oil such as Argan Oil and Jojoba Oil to get instant hydration. Our Cedarwood/Petitgrain Body Oil is perfect for daily use. It is a light weight formulation that absorbs easily into the skin. It gives long lasting moisturisation and maintains the oil level.

PROTECT
This is a major part of skincare, which is often overlooked. It is important to always keep the skin protected. It is observed that men don’t pay much attention to putting on sunscreen. This makes them more susceptible to UV damage. As it has been said time and again, sunscreen is a must. No matter whether you are outside or inside.
Another thing that should be kept in mind is the use of a proper aftershave. The skin is exposed after shaving and the baby cells are all out there. Protecting this premature layer is essential.
Furthermore, as signs of aging start appearing, it's the eyes that tell. Men have more puffy eyes, dark circles and deep lines around their eyes as they age. Of course, prevention is better than cure. It is advised to use proper eye cream in your night routine to keep that skin 15 years younger as it should be! The Under Eye Repair Oil is formulated to tackle all these problems.
Keeping these steps in mind, you can formulate your own skincare routine. Always keep in mind to use good quality and suitable products. This is of prime importance while using shaving products. Which also reminds us to warn you about using only sharp and clean razors for a perfect shave.
Skin care has endless possibilities. It is just a matter of sparing a few moments for self care. So get proactive and don’t hesitate to have smooth and healthy skin. Smash all the stereotypes as it’s high time to normalise something this basic. There is never a downside to skin care!
